Pringsheim (1946) noted the discovery of iron oxidizing organisms in addition to iron bacteria by Ehrenberg (1838) as a kind of chemoautotrophy that reduces carbon dioxide nonphotosynthetically. Pringsheim published a list of iron depositing organisms that includes the colorless and several photosynthetic Chrysophyceae, as well as 18 species of cyanobacteria, several PS and non-PS greens and euglenoids.
